The bael fruit, also known as the wood apple, is a round, hard-shelled fruit that grows on a tree native to India. The tree is also found in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. The fruit has a thick, fibrous layer that encloses a yellowish-white pulp. The pulp is sticky and has a sweet, pungent taste. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat digestive disorders. - Its scientific name is AEGIE MARMEIOS, also called Bengal Quince, Golden apple, bitter Japanese orange, stone apple, or wood apple.
- Aegeline is a known constituent of the bael leaf and is consumed as a dietary supplement with the intent to produce weight loss.
- Rich in Vitamin C, the fruits are dried and produced into candy, toffee, Pulp powder, or nectar.
- If fresh, the juice is strained and sweetened to make a drink.
